I don’t make New Years Resolutions. Global life changes just aren’t for me. I’m not gonna give up anything. I’m not going to go to the gym more. I don’t like the idea of doing something hard when everyone else is doing it, especially when I know that the majority of them (Google says 80%) fail by February.
I am a goal person though and I like the idea of the clean slate. The first of the year even falls on a MONDAY this year. It’s the ultimate starting line.
But before we can move forward we must first look back. 2017 as a whole was pretty much an uncontained dumpster fire but I had a few shining moments that I was really really happy with.
- Writing and Publishing my first novel, Lumen Cove.
This is obviously the biggest achievement for me this year. Publishing your first novel is hard, ya’ll. Writers, in general, are a neurotic bundle of psychosis but a writer trying to produce and promote their first novel? That’s a whole new level of angst.
I spent a lot of money on a lot of things that didn’t lead to sales or page reads. I put a lot of work into a lot of blog posts, newsletters, social media engagements for no one to read or click on them. That’s the nature of starting new. But I learned SO. MUCH. about the process and most importantly I proved that I could do it.
I had an AMAZING LAUNCH PARTY
And my friends, of course, were super supportive.
I’m excited to take that knowledge and make The Physics of Leaving the best it can possibly be.
2. Won NaNoWriMo
This was a feat of extreme, almost maniacal, perseverance and stubbornness. I was 30k behind on November 29th and I managed to hit 50K by midnight on the 30th. I wrote for 12 hours straight. I was half blind from it, but I finished half of The Physics of Leaving in a single day. Can I write an entire book in two days? Probably. Do I want to? Hell. No. Next year I hope to spread out the writing over the entire month and not just barf out half of the project in a single day.
But today starts a new year, and it’s time to focus on the future!
